About Saptak School
The Trust runs a music school by the name "Saptak School of Music". It imparts primary, intermediate and advance training in vocal, instruments like Sitar, Sarangi, Violin and Flute and percussion instruments like Tabla and Pakhawaj.
The School follows the Guru Shishya Parampara and so the emphasis is on personal one to one teaching. The Gurus are renowned performing artists and not mere theoreticians. They guide them not just in terms of Grammar of Music, but also more importantly in its aesthetics and presentation through demonstration and practice.
The institution does not believe in testing the students through examination-theoretical or practical - but they are taught in a way that they understand rather than memorize the theoretical aspects. The institute gives students the scope to perform in various events and listen to many top-ranking performers. This gives them the opportunity to analyze and enhance their practical skills and understanding. There is no fixed curriculum and the students are taught according to their aptitude and involvement. The Gurus aim at making students self-reliant by developing an understanding of the voice culture and the instrument design and maintenance.
The number of students in the school has increased from 77 in 1981 to around 250 in 2004. They belong to various age groups starting from eight years.
The students have been taking part in various state and national competitions including Pt. Omkarnath Thakur Competition, Rashtriya Yuva Utsav and University Youth Festivals. They have also been participating in the talent search organized by All India Radio. Many of them have won recognition at such events.
The school provides an environment of pure learning without any profit motive. It therefore, charges nominal fees and offers freeships to deserving and needy students.
